What are clear aligners?
Traditionally, orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth and correct misalignment has involved wearing braces. These metal brackets, wires, and elastic bands stay on the teeth at all times. They can only be removed or adjusted by a dentist or orthodontic specialist. Clear aligners are an alternative to braces. This treatment uses a series of invisible custom-fit oral appliances (aligners) to reposition the teeth. These appliances are made from a clear/transparent plastic that flexes for your comfort. Unlike braces, you can take them out of your mouth and put them back in easily.
Do they work as well as braces?
The first clear aligners were made available to the public in the late 1990s. Since then, millions of patients have been successfully treated with them. The aligners themselves have only gotten better with time. Due to advancements in technology, more patients are candidates for clear aligner therapy.
How do clear aligners “work”?
They are based on the same underlying principles as braces, which contribute to their effectiveness. Both braces and aligners apply continuous, gradual force to the teeth. It is this gentle yet consistent pressure that moves the teeth over time.
What do clear aligners treat?
By repositioning the teeth with aligners, we can:
- Close gaps between the teeth
- Straighten crowded teeth
- Correct an open bite, so all the upper and lower teeth come in contact with each other when the mouth is closed
- Treat an overbite so that the upper front teeth do not overlap the lower teeth excessively
- Treat an underbite, so the lower front teeth do not overlap the upper teeth excessively
- Correct a cross bite, so the upper teeth no longer “sit” too far inside or outside of the lower teeth
What can I expect from treatment?
Treatment starts by scheduling an appointment at Timeless Dentistry. During your visit, Prosthodontist, Dr. Paul Springs or Dr. Becca Baer will make a diagnosis based on extensive photographs and a scan of your teeth using special, advanced technologies. These scans help us to determine if you are a good candidate for clear aligners. You can also see your new smile with a digital treatment preview, which lets patients view a 3D image of their post-treatment teeth! If you approve it and want to move forward, your custom clear aligners will be made. Once we provide them to you, we’ll go over how to wear and care for your aligners.
